Welcome to Forest Circle Middle School´s Website!
The Final School Improvement List was published by the SC Department of Education January 22, 2010. Unfortunately, Forest Circle Middle School has not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) this school year (09-10), and the school improvement identification is Restructuring. Forest Circle Middle successfully met 16 out of 21 required targets on the AYP Report Card. The area that prevented the school from meeting AYP was student performance in both English/Language Arts and Math. A school must make AYP two consecutive years to exit school improvement. Forest Circle Middle has made tremendous efforts to improve student performance and to close the achievement gap. The staff is committed to meeting expected progress this school year.
Colleton County School District, with the support from the SC Department of Education, has initiated several improvement initiatives district wide. Five years ago, Colleton County instituted a new curriculum approved by the State Department of Education’s Office of Federal Programs to improve student performance on state assessments. This curriculum has now been adopted by the SC Department of Education to be available for implementation in all districts. In addition, teachers are provided throughout the school year appropriate staff development focused on our schools’ efforts to make AYP and the district’s mission and goals. Colleton teachers across grade spans and schools are working collaboratively to design assessments to prepare students for mandated standardized tests, tweaking and modifying curriculum guides, and adding resources that support and enhance the curriculum. Students take common grade level assessments in the middle and elementary schools to determine instructional needs. In addition to student performance, teaching performance is monitored frequently and feedback is provided to teachers in a timely manner.
Listed below are initiatives implemented at Forest Circle Middle School to address any academic issues that students struggle with in meeting grade level standards:
• Smart Board Training and Technology Implementation for all teachers and classrooms
• Implementation of the My Skills Tutor computer reading remediation program
• Implementation of the My Skills Tutor computer math remediation program
• Implementation of English I and Pre-Algebra classes in the 7th and 8th grades
• Focus on closing the achievement gap
• Improve parental communication
• Implementation of an academic recess period to help students with homework
